Autumn in Cheshire: What to do in 2023

We may be biased but here at The Swan, we believe that there’s no better place to enjoy a beautiful autumnal day than in our home county of Cheshire. The change of season is mere weeks away, so it’s time to get excited!

From glorious countryside to incredible attractions, Cheshire truly has it all and if you’re looking for a day out or even a weekend in the county, this blog will provide you with a guide on our favourite things to do.

Why visit Cheshire?

Located in England’s thriving North West region, Cheshire is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy a relaxing break or a leisurely day out.

Just a stone’s throw from neighbouring North Wales, Liverpool and Manchester, Cheshire is easily accessible via road and rail and boasts an array of stunning places to stay and eat (no we’re not biased..!).

At The Swan, we’re the perfect base for your Cheshire adventures, with exceptional food and a comfortable, luxurious stay guaranteed. What’s more, with our home of Tarporley being nestled right in the heart of the county and close to the A49 and M6, you can easily access a variety of attractions.

From here, you can explore all that the county has to offer and whether you’re a history buff, a lover of retail therapy, or an avid walker, there’s something for everyone here in this vibrant, picturesque and welcoming county.

Here’s some of our ideas for a perfect autumn day in Cheshire…

Hike the Sandstone Trail

A glorious 34-mile-long ramble, The Sandstone Trail is the perfect way to take in the beauty of central Cheshire and the surrounding area.

Created in 1974, the Sandstone Trail was voted as one of Britain’s favourite walks by ITV viewers, and given the abundance of stunning flora and fauna amid the spectacular landscapes, it is easy to see why the public are so fond of it!

The trail begins in Frodsham, an ancient market town on the banks of the Mersey and runs through Cheshire into northern Shropshire where it ends just over the county border at Whitchurch.

There are several ways in which you can plan your route with the official guidebook, ‘Walking Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail’, breaking the route up into seven stunning sections that have convenient start and finish points.

Being both close to so many amazing routes and the ideal midway point, if you’re taking on the Sandstone Trail, The Swan is the best place for you to take the weight off your feet and enjoy a well-earned rest.

Visiting Jodrell Bank Observatory

This Autumn, Jodrell Bank  promises to be an unforgettable experience. As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, this iconic scientific facility nestled in the Cheshire countryside becomes a captivating destination. The serene surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for exploring the mysteries of the universe.

Wander through the lush gardens and admire the breath-taking Lovell Telescope, an engineering marvel that has been probing the depths of space for decades. With the cool Autumn breeze rustling the leaves, take a guided tour to delve into the history of radio astronomy and the incredible discoveries made at Jodrell Bank. This season offers a unique opportunity to stargaze under clearer skies, making it an ideal time to participate in public observing sessions and witness celestial wonders. And just under half an hour from The Swan, were the perfect pitstop to grab a bite after a day of adventure!

Enjoy some retail therapy in Chester and Cheshire Oaks

Just 25 minutes from the Swan lies the beautiful city of Chester, which offers a magical shopping experience thanks to its range of well-known retailers, vintage shops and small boutiques.

You can also enjoy some of the fantastic stalls at the newly opened Chester Market, where you can purchase beautifully made custom gifts, a present for your furry friend, or even some potted plants for your home.

While you shop, you can explore the city’s unique Rows, meander through narrow-side streets and stroll along the River Dee and take in the gorgeous autumnal scenery.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s also nearby Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet village which truly is a shopper’s paradise. Home to huge names like Polo Ralph Lauren, Nike and Levi’s, there are over 140 shops to choose from.

There’s plenty of free parking at Cheshire Oaks, with options to reserve spaces and best of all it’s only a half an hour drive from The Swan which means you can join us for a well-deserved bite to eat once you’ve finished your shop!
